Biscuit
Preheat oven to 190°C / Gas 5. Grease two baking trays. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg and vanilla essence. Stir in the flour and bring together with your hands. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 5mm. Cut out star shapes and place on a baking tray. With a skewer, make a small hole at the top of each biscuit. Bake for 8–9 minutes until a pale golden brown. Allow to cool slightly, then move to a wire rack.
Water Icing
Sift sugar into a bowl, gradually adding warmed water until it forms a thick paste. Pipe over the biscuits and decorate with the silver balls. Carefully thread some fine ribbon through the hole in each biscuit and hang on your tree.
