Julie Paul is the interior expert in ANTA's London showroom. We asked her to give us an insight into how she became an interior expert, and where she gets her design inspiration from...

Tell us about yourself - how did you get into interior design?
After 10 years of working in a marketing role in the City, I decided I wanted to retrain as an Interior Designer and went back to college at the age of 30 to study at The Chelsea College of Art and Design in Pimlico London. It’s the best decision I ever made!

What was your first interior job and how did you end up at ANTA?
I started my interior design and retail career at OKA, and over the ten years I was there became Head of Interior Design and Trade. Designing, installing and managing creative projects all over the world, OKA gave me a fantastic grounding of working within a luxury brand.  ANTA was introduced to me by a good friend five years ago. I admired ANTA from a distance until I met the Managing Director, Annie in late 2016. Her enthusiasm and creativity were an inspiration to be around, and in early 2017 I joined the ANTA team.

What inspires your interior design style?
Texture! Seeing the rough against the smooth, or at ANTA the Highland tweed against the linen, is very aesthetically pleasing. I like a scheme that is visually exciting as well as tactile to touch. You can see my favourite designs on my Pinterest board.May 16th pt 2

Are you seeing any particular style requests trending amongst your clients?
It has to be colour, and ANTA has the best colour palette! It is wonderful to see clients appreciate colour, I definitely think colour and texture is what ANTA is all about.

What's your favourite ANTA product and why?
The “girl” in me adores the Ochil and the Torridon, but the slightly more “grown up” Julie revels in the Aberbothrie and the Inverness.blog Where do you like to shop?
Anywhere that is open!

What’s the most treasured item in your own home?
With the exception of my family, it would have to be the interiors pieces that I have collected throughout my life. Some have been bought in shops, others handed down the generations, together with a few pieces that I selected at auctions.

In your own words, interior designers should never…
Apologise for trying something new, even if it does not work it's good to try things out.

What's your favourite thing about living in London?
The buildings and the different cultures.

How do you like to spend your spare time?
I love to spend time with my family and friends. I love people, exploring different countries and learning about different cultures. I love to swim and there is nothing better than a thriller to read, or a costume drama to watch at the cinema.

Where do you think is the best place in London for a) coffee? b) drinks c) dinner with friends
A) Joe and the Juice bar
B) The Scarfes Bar at the Rosewood Hotel
C) Fisher's on Marylebone High Street

What do you think will be popular, or the next trends in interior design, fashion and food over the next 5 years?
For interiors - Colour, and ANTA has it covered
For fashion - Even bigger handbags!
For food - More noodle soups and broths, I think Vietnamese pho is just the beginning!

What's the most important thing you have learnt from working at ANTA?
People appreciate beautiful and handmade products.
